The Month of Dhul-Hijjah: Instructions from the Prophet (PBUH)

The Beginning of Dhul-Hijjah

When the month of Dhul-Hijjah begins, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) gave some important instructions regarding it.

The Prophet (PBUH) said in an authentic hadith:

During these ten days, Allah loves righteous deeds very much.

The Virtue of the First Ten Days

So, the days from the first to the tenth of Dhul-Hijjah are very special.

Any good deed performed during these days whether it is fasting, praying Tahajjud, giving charity, or doing any act of kindness—earns greater reward than on regular days.

Mention in the Qur'an

Another point is that these days have been sworn upon in the Holy Qur’an.

"By the dawn, and the ten nights" (Surah Al-Fajr)

Most scholars of Tafsir agree that these ten nights refer to the nights of Dhul-Hijjah.

Hence, both the days and nights of Dhul-Hijjah hold great virtue.

Guidelines for Those Intending to Sacrifice

And the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said regarding these days, in an authentic hadith:

Whoever intends to offer a sacrifice should refrain from cutting their nails and hair during these days.

This is preferable and recommended not obligatory or mandatory but it is better for the one who plans to offer a sacrifice to avoid cutting their hair and nails from the first day of Dhul-Hijjah until the sacrifice is made.
