On Whom Is Qurbani (Sacrificial Slaughter) Obligatory? What Is the Nisab for Qurbani?

Qurbani is obligatory on every sane, adult, free, Muslim man and woman who possesses the Nisab and is a resident during the days of Qurbani.

What Is the Difference Between the Estimation of Nisab for Zakat and Qurbani?

First Difference: Requirement of Passing a Year:

Remember, there are two types of differences between the Nisab of Zakat and Qurbani.

How many differences? Two.

The first difference is that for Zakat, it is necessary for a full year to pass.

Until a complete year (hawl) has passed over the wealth, Zakat is not obligatory.

For Qurbani, it is not necessary for a year to pass over the wealth.

Rather, anyone who possesses the Nisab between the dawn of the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah and the sunset of the 12th, even if they did not possess it before, Qurbani becomes obligatory upon them.

Second Difference: Nature of the Wealth,

Zakat is only obligatory on growing wealth (maal-e-naami).

What does "naami" mean?

Wealth that has the capacity to grow either actually or legally.

For example, gold and silver. Likewise, goods purchased for trade since profit is expected from them are considered growing wealth.

Hence, Zakat is only due on items that have the potential to grow.

Whereas, for Qurbani to be obligatory, the wealth does not need to be growing.

Rather, any assets that are above basic needs (haajat-e-asliyah) whether it's land, your own home, a shop, furniture, or any other item beyond essential needs make Qurbani obligatory.
